The Hockey Puck Encoder

General Information
The Hockey Puck is a revolutionary new rotary encoder that is non-contact to the measuring surface and compensates for mechanical misalignment. It has no shaft or bearings so the problems of drag, endplay, corrosion, side loading, and push-out have been eliminated. The user mounts a magnet on the rotating object and locates the encoder close by. Precise mounting is not required, as it will tolerate changes in distance, centering and planer tilt. This is important as the machine wears over time. Non-contact means vibration and shock from the mechanics are not transmitted directly to the electronics in the encoder. Our advanced design provides a wide range of operating voltages, temperatures, and resolutions. Built-in over-voltage, mis-wire and spike protection keep this encoder running.
A Designer Kit is available for you to experience the possibilities for yourself.

Sensing Envelope
The Hockey Puck has the ability to sense the rotational position of a magnet in a variety of ways. The figures below show potential magnet placement areas (envelopes) using the center or the outside of the encoder. Of course, other positions or angles can be used. Also noteworthy is that strong external magnetic fields may adversely affect performance.

Center Envelope
The magnet is mounted to the center of the gear and the center of the Hockey Puck is located in the front of the gear.

  Adjacent Envelope
The rotating shaft is slipped through a ring magnet. The ring magnet can be sensed by the Hockey Puck from the side. Please note that when sensing from the side slight non-linearity exists depending on the ring magnet selected.

Magnets
The magnet plays an important role in the overall measurement. Joral offers magnets of many shapes and sizes, depending on the application. Typical magnets would be of the disk or ring shape in the 4 to 20mm diameter range. A small disk magnet could be mounted on the end of a shaft. A ring magnet could be slid through a shaft. A bar magnet could be rotated or moved linearly. Joral offers a Designer Kit containing an encoder and an assortment of magnets. Consult the factory for additional information.

Options
The Hockey Puck comes standard in 30, 40, 50 and 58mm diameter packages in the standard resolutions with the push/pull quadrature output. Customizations are available with the connector, the resolution, absolute position output, color, labeling, power supply voltage, and other electrical or mechanical modifications. Please contact the factory to discuss your application requirements.
